Hi, I'm Wenyu Fan
You can call me Wendy / 范文玉
I'm a 3rd-year CS student at University of Sydney, exploring the intersection of Technology, Design, and AI. Recently, I'm interested in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), focusing on how generative AI can reshape writing education.

Where I've Been
The Computer Science Core
The constant thread of my academic journey
Throughout my Bachelor of Science (Dalyell Stream) at USYD, Computer Science has been my fundamental language. This ongoing technical education provides the "how" to my "why"—supplying the engineering discipline required to turn conceptual research into functional, scalable systems.
Intersecting with HCI
The synthesis of Tech, Design, and Intelligence
My journey eventually converged at the research frontier of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)—the field where my interests in CS, design, and AI naturally align. Working with Dr. Katy Gero at the University of Sydney, I now apply my CS background to investigate the future of creativity. My current research focuses on AI-powered writing assistants, exploring how generative tools can reshape student writing education.
Discovering AI & NLP
Moving from textbooks to intelligent systems
Seeking to apply CS to real-world challenges, I encountered the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence. Leading a team to build a RAG-based User Content Summariser was my first deep dive into architecting AI systems. This experience didn't just teach me a new tool; it gave me hands-on insights into how AI can empower users by transforming raw data into meaningful human knowledge, as well as reshaped how I view AI as a collaborator in human productivity.
Encountering Interaction Design
Finding the human-centered 'Why' within the code
While tackling CS core units, I discovered the elective unit 'Introduction to Interface Design'. It was a pivotal moment where I found it fascinating to apply design thinking methodology to deconstruct problems and craft high-fidelity solutions in Figma. This taught me to bridge technical rigor with a sensitive, user-oriented approach, ensuring that the software I build is as intuitive as it is powerful.
Liberal Arts Background
Bridging curiosity and creation
My high school background in History, Politics, and Geography built my foundation in analytical thinking. However, I soon realized that technology is the essential medium needed to bring my ideas to life—from architecting this personal website to solving complex systemic problems. This shift from theory to creation led me to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.
